Oksana SHVETS [Оксана Швецьwas killed on Thursday 17th of March when the building where she was staying in Kiev was hit by Russian rocket fire. A famous actress, she studied performing arts at the Ivan Franko Theatre and the Karpento-Kary National Institute before joining the Kyiv National Academic Molodyy Theatre company in the 1980’s (also known as The Young Theater, named after the experimental company of the eminent Ukrainian director Les Kourbas, active in Kyiv in 1917-1919). This was also the first to announce her death, with sadness and anger, on their website (molodytheatre.com). Oksana Shvets was known as a stage actress as well as for her roles in film and on TV. Her part in the famous saga Budynok z liliyamy (House with Lilies) made her a household name in Ukraine. Her last significant stage role was that of Hanna in Andriy Bilous's play The Enchanted based on Ivan Karpenko-Kary's drama The Fortuneless Maiden (1886). In 1996, she was awarded the highest accolade for performing artists: “Merited Artist of Ukraine”. Oksana Shvets was 67 years old when she died at the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
